In today’s, live lesson we will be reading the first few pages of The Viewer by Shaun Tan. Though, the main focus of this lesson, are the images. You will be using your inference skills to deduce meaning from the many strange and curious images that the book contains. You’ll do this, by answering questions verbally during the lesson and as part of your independent activity.

*LESSON 3 – SPELLINGS – Homophones and Near Homophones

Today’s spellings will focus on homophones and near homophones. You will have your spelling test, tomorrow, 04/02/21.

You will need a dictionary, as you will be writing the meanings for each word. Once, you have found the meaning, you then need to use the word in a sentence, this allows you to make sure that you have used it, in the right context.

E.g. Alter (verb), means to change something, usually slightly, or to cause the characteristics of something to change.

We had to alter some of our plans.

Also, this is another opportunity to increase the words in your vocabulary. These will be your spelling words for next week’s spelling test.

Here you can find this week’s spelling list – you can also print it off and practice your handwriting.

Today, we will be looking at how to calculate the area of compound shapes. This is slightly more tricky than finding the area of rectangles but if you managed to complete yesterday’s work then you will be able to definitely give this a go! . You will need to bring with you, your times table and addition knowledge, along with pen and paper.

This is your opportunity to use as many WOW adjectives, verbs and adverbs in your writing. It is your opportunity to show of the new skills that you have learnt and to include: non finite clauses; relative clauses and expanded noun phrases.

10:00-11:00: Lesson 1 – Live Online: Literacy – Non-Finite Clauses

Yesterday, I struggled to deliver the lesson half with Mr Brown and half with me. Today it’s all me and I’m stealing (magpieing!) Mr Brown’s slides. Hopefully it’s a bit more fluid.

We’re exploring a thing called non-finite clauses. We don’t really need to worry too much about the name or why they’re called that – you’ll have seen examples of them as they’re a type of subordinate opener. They help to add variety to our writing and give us more options for how we start our sentences. They also allow us to add more information in the same sentence.

Come with your “The Viewer” work from the last few days, along with pen and paper.

*LESSON 2 – MATHS: Area of Rectangles

Continuing on from yesterday’s counting squares, today, you will be looking at the area of rectangles. It is another re-cap lesson and looks more strictly at rectangles and the multiplication required to find their area. The first page really only tests your times tables but the second page goes a little deeper and you’ll need multiple and factor knowledge, some clever logic for question 7 and some problem solving strategies for Q8.

*LESSON 3 – Art

In today’s Art lesson you will be creating 3D effects by using  grids and black and white colouring – which is good as all you need is one pen or pencil to do these and you can experiment a bit! Having a ruler will help but something straight is fine too. It’d also be good if your pen doesn’t smudge under a ruler.

Mr Kelly, although not the great at art has stayed resilient, followed the instructions and managed to begin a reasonably decent piece. Yyu can get some tips and instructions in this video here. In the video, he talks about having the PDF handy too – that’s the instruction slides in an easier to read way – you really don’t have to print these – just having them open on screen should be fine. There were some technical difficulties here, so the video was slightly rushed but it shouldn’t effect your outcome.

Your task is to complete (at least!) one of the pieces. There are a few options, starting with the easiest and moving to the most difficult. I can’t wait to see your effects. Make sure you enjoy it and become absorbed.

14:15 – 15:15: Live Session –Which word class, will help you describe? AFTERNOON CATCH UP

  • Will discuss today’s work – was it easy/just right for you/difficult/challenging?
  • You will share your non screen time activities and see how many of you were able to complete the kindness task..

10:00-11:00: Lesson 1 – Live Online: Literacy Verbs and Adverbs

This week, you are going to begin to plan and write your opening for The Viewer. In order, for you to write a powerful piece of descriptive writing, you must make sure that your writing includes words from all word classes. Last week you looked at nouns and adjectives, today the focus are verbs and adverbs.

Pen and paper will be needed, along with a dictionary as we may look at the meanings of some verbs and adverbs.

Why are verbs important in a sentence?

Remember to find the meaning of these: scavenged and inquisitively

Once that’s clear, I will give you time to make sure all your links work and you are able to open the documents and videos. Also, you should take a look at the independent work and make sure you understand is expected of you.

Can I remind you all that no one should be in their pyjamas or in bed! Everybody should also make sure that they have eaten their breakfast before the register is taken. The register is taken at 09:25. This is a learning environment and I need you to take it as seriously as you do, when you are in class. 10:00-11:00: Live Online Lesson 1: English

This week we will you will be using Oak Academy for your literacy learning. You may have used it back in the first lockdown. Oak Academy has many resources for all academic subjects and for all children (Primary and Secondary).

Today’s lesson. we will be going through it together, so that you know how to confidently use the resources and what is expected from you for the rest of the week. We will watch the video together and complete the worksheet together.

As the resources are already there please do not go on ahead, it will be easy to do so but you run the risk of spoiling what we discuss in the afternoon session.

***INDEPENDENT LEARNING*** ***LESSONS 2 & 3***

11:00-14:15: During this time, you are expected, to complete the work for all three subjects, independently and upload it to the blog. Do not to undertake your non screen time activity as I do not want you to be in front of the computer/laptop/tablet/phone screen all day.

*LESSON 2 – MATHS – Measure Perimeter

This week, the focus in Maths is perimeter, you looked at this on Friday during your Mathletics session.

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a 2D shape.

Many of you may find today’s lesson slightly difficult as it does require you to print the worksheet but it not impossible. I said, difficult not, not possible!!!

For Q 1, 2, 3, 7 & 8 – you can do it off screen. For a couple all you’ll need is a ruler or even a tape measure (like a builder uses – even a clothes measuring one will work fine!) to draw your own. If you don’t have anything to measure with or you’re unable to print, rather than doing Q 4, 5 & 6, I’d like you to try and measure a few things in your house – the perimeter of your table, the perimeter of your bedroom and the perimeter of a door frame in your house. If you don’t have a ruler or anything to measure, you could measure with your feet or with A4 pages – these are roughly 30cm long so if you managed to go around your table 15 times with an A4 page your table has a perimeter of 4.5m!

(you need to watch the video to find out!!!). As always make sure you have pen and paper, to make notes from the video, as this will help you, when you do your independent activity.
