  • How do you answer comprehension questions?

Today, we are looking at multiples of 10, 100 & 1000. We will be using our previous mathematical knowledge, our times-table knowledge and other “known facts” to answer complex operations.

So, if:

3 x 4 =  then 30 x 4 = 120.

5 x 7 = 35 then 5 x 700 = 3500

*LESSON 2 – LITERACY – Introduce an argument

Today is the day!!! Today is the day, you do your ‘big write’. You will be writing a persuasive letter, in order to highlight, the devastating effects of deforestation. You will be using, all the elements from this week’s literacy lessons to compile your letter. You will need to make sure that you have at least 3 P.E.E statements/paragraphs and your counter arguments from yesterday. The expectation, is that a majority of you, will be able to write a letter that is at least a page long.

You’ll need a pen and paper and some time to reflect and write down a few thoughts. Start by watching this video from Mr St Aimee, one of the Year 5 teachers from Cypress Primary School.  At the end Mr St Aimee goes through 3 scenarios. He guides you through the first.

Your task for the day is to reflect on the 2nd (leaving rubbish behind is the action) and 3rd (practising your spelling) scenarios and what the consequences are for those actions.

We’re exploring gravity more deeply this week and then looking into what happens when it’s in balance or imbalance with other forces. Before the session starts you’ll need to watch this introductory video about gravity on BBC.

*LESSON 3 – Thematic -Write a Diary Entry

Start by watching this video – it explains the task, tells you to download this information pdf to use as your research and there is a modelled write to help get you started.

The task is to write about 3/4 of a page in first person as a Viking person. You’ll need to choose your job, where you live, what your hobbies are and what your religion is. It’s a bit like a diary entry so you’re allowed to be informal. Remember, you’re creating your character, so you can be anything – as long as it’s historically accurate. Upload before 14:15 if you can – if you can’t take photos then there is no reason you can’t simply type it up in your homework upload. Remember – no excuses!

You are then going to research Bob Dylan and why he is considered to be “The Greatest Song Writer of all time.”

Here is today’s schedule:

09:15-09:30: Log into our google meet. Say good morning to your classmates. As always, there will be early morning work to active those muscles in your grey matter. Today we will be discussing the change that is happening around us and how we are dealing with it. We will also be sharing our soothing places and the people that we can talk to when we are feeling good or bad.

09:25-09:30: Register.

09:30-10:00: Together we’ll go through today’s work and discuss any issues. Once that’s clear, I will give you time to make sure all your links work and you are able to open the documents and videos. Also, you should take a look at the independent work and make sure you understand is expected of you.

Can I remind you all that no one should be in their pyjamas or in bed! This is a learning environment and I need you to take it as seriously as you do, when you are in class. There should, also, be no personal discussions or spamming via the chat unless advised to do so!

Literacy: RAINFORESTS – WILDLIFE – PLANTS

You will need a pen, lined paper and any notes you made pertaining to plants/trees found in rainforests.

You are to continue to write your paragraphs for your rainforest information booklet. Today we will be looking at Wildlife – Plants of the Rainforests.  This will be the third section of your information booklet (non-fiction text).

The focus of this week, is looking at the different ways in which you can start sentences. Remember, this will make your writing even more interesting.

Maths: MULTIPLY BY 10 (Recap)

Continuing with multiplication, today you will be multiplying by 10. You have done this in the past, so I am expecting, that a majority of you should feel confident in doing the independent work. Many of you may find that you finish the worksheet quite quickly. If that is the case, I want you to attempt the extension worksheet.

When watching the video, make sure to take any notes, if it will aid in your understanding of how to multiply by 10. You can go back or pause the video as many times as you want! You will, as always, need pen and paper.

Remember – when multiplying by 10, the digits move, one space to the left (the zero fills the empty space).

PSHE: HOW TO DEAL WITH CHANGE

Start off by watching the video below. I apologise if it doesn’t work on school laptops – it’s not absolutely necessary though if you can watch it on a phone or something else, that would be great. Perhaps you recognise the illustrations – we have already read something from this author. As you listen, think about how the main character has responded to change.

Next task is to watch this video. It’s a narrated PowerPoint, by Mr Kelly, that talks about change and how we deal with it. Do you have someone to talk to usually? Can you talk to them now?

The main task is draw a picture of place the soothes you – somewhere you go when you’re feeling down. Maybe it’s in the garden, maybe it’s under the dinner table with a blanket thrown over the top…it’s up to you. Sketch it out using some of the skills Mrs Stutter taught you and surround it with the names of people with whom you’d like to share your feelings – good or bad, lockdown or not. I hope we can share some ideas when we meet this afternoon.

Maths: SQUARE NUMBERS.

Today you will be learning about square numbers.

A square number is the result you get when a number is multiplied by itself.

For example, 25 is a square number of because it’s 5 lots of 5 or 5 x 5.

 

Be ready to pause the video at various points as instructed by the narrator. Remember it starts with a kind of “Five-a-day” to get your brain working. He’s quite quick to move on but you’ll need to show some independence and resilience here. Do not just watch the video passively through without engaging – you have the option to go back and see it again if you’re not sure.  Please make sure you do that if you are unsure. You will need pen and paper.

Thematic: KING ALFRED THE GREAT.

Today, you will be looking at a specific individual that lived during the Viking period. The individual that you will learning about today, is King Alfred the Great. King Alfred the Great was the King of Wessex. He was an Anglo-Saxon who lived from 871 -899 AD. He played a very important role in making peace between the Anglo-Saxons and the invading Danes.

Your independent task will be a King Alfred the Great comprehension sheet. You will need to read the information at least twice in order to answer the questions . As I have always said, the answers are within the text!!! Read the text carefully and more than once.
