Good morning Venus,

Welcome to the last day, of our first week, of online learning!

Here is today’s schedule:

09:15-09:30: Log into our google meet. Say good morning to your classmates. As always, there will be early morning work to active those muscles in your grey matter.

09:25-09:30: Register.

09:30-10:00: Together we’ll go through today’s work and discuss any issues. Once that’s clear, I will give you time to make sure all your links work and you are able to open the documents and videos. Also, you should take a look at the independent work and make sure you understand is expected of you.

10:00-11:00: Live Online Lesson: SPELLING AND DICTIONARY WORK.

You will need a pen and lined paper. Today, you will have your  spelling test based on the words that you were given on Wednesday.

We will be writing out, some of the new spellings in context with correct usage. You can do your handwriting practice as well and you’ll be able to use an online dictionary.

You will, also, be given your spelling words for next Friday’s ‘traditional’ spelling test.

This week’s spelling list – you can also print it off and practice your handwriting Spelling List Week 2

11:00-14:15: Here you will be expected to complete the following work independently and upload it to the blog.

Maths: PRIME NUMBERS.

Today you will be learning about prime numbers.

A prime number can be thought of as a special numbers, as they can only be divided by themselves and 1. 19 is a prime number. It can only be divided by itself and 1.

Be ready to pause the video at various points as instructed by the narrator. It starts with a kind of “Five-a-day” to get your brain working. He’s quite quick to move on but you’ll need to show some independence and resilience here. Don’t just watch the video passively through without engaging though – you have the option to go back and see it again if you’re not sure. You will need pen and paper.

Click here to watch the video Prime Numbers Video

Today’s main worksheet Prime Numbers

Today’s ‘support’ worksheet if you’re finding the main sheet overly challenging  Prime Numbers 2

Extension worksheet if you manage to finish the main work very quickly Prime Numbers Ext

If you find yourself having difficulties, you can join Miss Warby’s session on Monday.

11:15 – This is also an opportunity for any of you who found yesterday’s work challenging to join Miss Warby’s room (epsvenus2).

Good morning Venus,

Here is today’s learning schedule:

09:15: Log into our Google Meet. Early Morning Work.

09:15-09:20: Register.

09:20-10:00: Together we’ll go through today’s work and discuss any issues. Once that’s clear, take the time to make sure all your links work and you’re able to open the documents and videos. Once you’ve managed that, take a look at the independent work and be sure you understand is expected of you.

10:00-11:00: Live Online Lesson: Maths – Factors. All you need is a pen and paper. Factors of a number are the numbers which when multiplied make up the other number: 2 x 3 = 6 therefore, 3 & 2 are both factors of 6. If you’re able to, you could bring with you up to 20 “counters” – these could be anything like penny coins or pieces of Lego but they should all be the same size.

11:15 – This is also an opportunity for any of you who found yesterday’s work challenging to join Miss Warby’s room (epsvenus2).

11:00-14:15: Independent work and time to upload it to the blog.

English: RAINFOREST RESEARCH.

Today we’re continuing with our Rainforest research.

There is a PowerPoint that you will need to watch, it is about taking notes. The important part is that you are not to copy things down. It needs to be in your own words. We talk about organising your notes as well and you have to remember we’re starting from the point of yesterday’s work – those 5 or 6 topics (your headings) are where you will focus your research and you should spend around 40 minutes reading, skimming and note taking, adding these things to perhaps 5 or 6 separate sheets of paper with your headings on top.

Literacy PP 07.01.21

Here are some links to get you started:

Google Earth: Explore rainforests from your living room – type in Amazon, Congo, Daintree and Southeast Asian Rainforest. See where it takes https://earth.google.com/web

Conserve Energy Future: A website which will give you a good introduction. Read through and take some interesting points as you go.  https://www.conserve-energy-future.com/biggest-popular-rainforests-world.php

Cool kids facts: This is a nice introduction to some key vocabulary – particularly words like “understory” and “canopy”. https://www.coolkidfacts.com/rainforest-facts-for-kids/

Ducksters: I like this site as it doesn’t make it too “childish” for you – it treats you like the proper scientists you are! https://www.ducksters.com/science/ecosystems/rainforest_biome.php

Kiddle: This website will be good for getting a better understanding of “the five layers”….

https://kids.kiddle.co/Rainforest

RE: GURU NANAK.

We are continuing with our topic of Sikihism.

Start by watching this BBC Bitesize video of the Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak is the founder of Sikhism and the first “Guru” or teacher. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zgyr87h

RE PP 07.01.21

Your task is to create a newspaper report on the Founding of Sikhism, referencing the events that led to Guru Nanak to begin this religion. Here is a word document template of a newspaper that you can print out but, as always, you don’t have to print.

Newspaper Template Option 1

Newspaper Template Option 22

For a really great piece on this, you may have to do your own research beyond the video. Start with this “Kiddle” website.

14:15 – 15:15 Discuss work and answers. Quiz/riddle time. Read Beowulf.

See at 09:15.

Good morning Venus,

Welcome to our very first day of Year 5 home learning!

Here is today’s schedule:

09:15-09:30: Log into our google meet. There will be some early morning work for you to get in the right frame of mind. Make sure you finish any breakfast and you’re dressed and ready to learn with a pen, a sharp pencil and quite a few sheets of paper.
I’ll then take the register.

09:30-10:00: Housekeeping and expectations. Here we’ll discuss what is expected of you in our online engagement, how to do certain things like blur your background, uploading files to the blog and naming/saving procedures, etc. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and I’ll record this session and post it to the blog alongside written instructions.
We’ll also spend some time together going through today’s work but you’ll also need to go to the blog yourself and go over it, opening up the appropriate documents and making sure you’re clear with what is expected.

10:00-11:00: Live Online Lesson: SPELLING AND DICTIONARY WORK. All you need is a pen and lined paper. Today is the day you’ll be given your spelling words for Friday’s “traditional” spelling test. we’ll be writing out some of the words in context with correct usage. You can do your handwriting practice as well and you’ll be able to use an online dictionary. This week’s spellings Spelling List – Week 1

11:00-14:15: Here you’ll be expected to complete the following work independently and upload to the blog. (You’ll also be able to eat and use the toilet!) and be ready to come back online at 14:15.

Maths: MULTIPLES.
We’re starting our multiplication and division topic today. Multiples are all the numbers which appear on a certain times table – the multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 etc….there is no limit to how many multiples a number has!

Worksheet for main activity – We should all aim to start here. Don’t go printing all the resources now – you’ll be fine to work from the screen Multiples Main
You’ll then need to watch this video with a pen and paper handy https://vimeo.com/468940874

If you’re having difficulties here you can join Miss Warby’s session tomorrow. There is also an Extension worksheet if you found it easy Multiples Extension

English: RAINFOREST RESEARCH.

Our task for the next few weeks is to create an information booklet, on Rainforests.  Today’s task is to create a concept map of ideas about the rainforest that will help direct your research for the coming days. You are effectively planning the headings for your non-fiction text, the information booklet.
Start by watching the  narrated PowerPoint I had wanted to include the YouTube video in the PowerPoint but the sound was no good so you’ll need to pause the video, come out and watch this video here before returning to the narrated PowerPoint https://my.uso.im/drive/folder/449780/preview/2966484#

The video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vijLre760w

Here is a copy of the “concept map” which you can use. Remember, you needn’t print it out. Concept Map

If you manage to complete this task quickly you can begin by thinking about your sub-headings by doing more general research on rainforests. Remember not to copy down things word for word but to use your own words to “paraphrase” other writing.

14:15 – 15:15: Please log back in so that we can go over the work and share good ideas. I’ll also need to know if any of you have found anything too challenging so that I can organise Miss Warby’s lesson for tomorrow.
We’ll also take the opportunity to calculate dojo points/raffles, introduce “Star of the Day”. I would also like to incorporate quizzes and storytime during this time also (finish the BFG?).

I look forward to seeing you all at 09:15! It’s going to be fun. The first of (at least?) 28 days like this!
